Small Empowered teams of co-workers are replacing the traditional management model of supervisor / worker in successful businesses. We can no longer afford the overhead of middle managers, and we can no longer afford to not fully use the intelligence and creativity of workers. There is a whole field of study in business about process design - working back from the end product that the customer receives to streamline and integrate all of the activities that lead up to that result, so that customers get better products and services and they cost less to produce.

A good place to start is the book: the E-Myth by Michael Gerber. He also has a consulting business called The E-Myth Academy with some good basic information on business process design.

There are a whole series of books put out by Addison Wesley called the Engineering Process Improvement Series. Here is one you can take a look at:
