AMD announced availability of Dual Core Processors last week; 1 week after Intel released their Intel Pentium D and Extreme Edition Dual core Processors. Motherboard support for the new chips is also available. This gives you the benefits of a dual processor computer at much less cost. Expect this to become typical for desktops in the next couple of years. Prices start at about $270 for the new chips, or only about $100 more than a single CPU chip. System cost is about $500 to $1000 more for a dual processor system.

64 Bit processors are also moving into the mainstream. Current CPU’s are 32 Bit. The new 64 Bit processors are designed to be backward compatible with current applications, but will require new software for any part of the program that directly accesses hardware, such as video and printer drivers. Windows XP x64 is out now, which supports the new chips. It will take a little time for the software to become available to make these a practical desktop alternative. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/default.mspx
