Security continues to be a major issue for our clients. We had one client
who got hacked, and another who got a virus last month. The hacking occurred
either due to a weak password on terminal services, or a windows
vulnerability that was not patched quickly enough. We recommend that every
computer have both a local and a network password if you are connected to the
internet, even if everyone uses the same password. The password should be a
combination of letters and numbers, and at least 6-8 characters.
The virus was most likely the result of someone opening an infected email
attachment before the Anti-Virus software was updated to detect that virus.
There is always a window of danger with a new virus. When a virus comes out, it
takes the Anti-Virus software companies a day or so to discover it, analyze it,
and issue an updated pattern file that detects it. During that time, your only
protection is to practice safe computing. Don’t open emails that you don’t
recognize. Have a firewall between the internet and your network. Set your web
browse to prompt before running code, and make sure your web browser (and
computer) is patched with the latest security updates.
Outlook 2003 provides significant improvements in safety with handling
email. You have more control over attachments, and Web links are blocked by
default in preview mode.
We are recommending Linksys WRT54G wireless routers. Linksys is now a
division of Cisco. These routers combine a firewall with a wireless access
point, and use firmware developed by Cisco. After testing various models, the
Linksys has the best combination of features for the price at present (About
$100). The indoor wireless coverage range is 150 feet, and an external antenna
can be attached for situations requiring more coverage. I would suggest
upgrading if your firewall/router is more than 2 years old. Also, consider
using wireless in the office, adding mobility to everything from laptops and
PDA’s to network printers and workstations. Best Buy and others have been
running promotions -selling for about $80 After rebates. http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=601

Laptop technology continues to advance. You may have seen ads for laptops
with the Pentium "M" or Centrino CPU. Because of the way it is designed,
it gets more done per clock cycle than P4 chips. http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,109606,00.asp
