Recent changes and new phone services may make it worthwhile to review your phone setup.
“Clear” (formerly Clearwire) wireless is offering higher speed wireless internet, which they claim will work with the next generation of Sprint phones for VOIP Calls from your cell phone. Clear is offering 4G speeds for mobile users within the Visalia/Tulare area.
Google Voice has opened up their free service to everyone. Google Voice allows you to select a local phone number, and use that number for incoming calls, which you can direct to any existing phone. You can give out one number, and have it reach whatever phone you are using at the time. Voicemail records your calls, and can email you the recording. You can make outgoing calls by entering your Google number, then the number to be dialed, causing all calls to be local. You could then add this to your “friends and family” list and eliminate all excess minute charges for your cell phone. You can combine this with Skype by making this number your Skype Caller ID, so it shows as the number you are calling from. Apps for your cell phone make it easy to manage all this.
With an add on service (also free for basic service) called SIPGate you can make VOIP calls through your Google number, and have another VOIP number on your computer that you can forward incoming calls to.
